THE FAMILY IPOH ‘SAR HO FAN’ & CLEAR BEAN SPROUT STEAMED CHICKEN RICE
For sure ‘Ipoh Chicken Rice’ always the favourite food taken by locals and one of the Malaysia’s representative eatery for those tourists from all different countries. Mr. Tan Eng Aik (Ah Tan) who is the founder, then together with his eldest sister Ms. Pat Tan Suet Chin and his sister in law Ms. Helen Wong Siew Ling who are also the current immediate owners operating their three outlets well known “Restoran Kar Heong” specialise in Ipoh ‘Sar Ho Fan’ and steamed Ipoh Chicken Rice at Subang Jaya, Damansara and Cheras.
Ah Tan who since his childhood helping his mother at their food stall stepped into the industry at his age of only 16 years old in the year 1980 running his first ‘Ipoh Sar Ho Fan’ food stall in the Seaview Restaurant at Sea Park, Petaling Jaya using his recipe for about 3 years then quit the industry travelled overseas to expose his future. Unfortunately Ah Tan back to Malaysia in the year 1987 and established his kopitiam at Sentosa, Seksyen 17 for only about a year then joined the ‘Golden Palace Restaurant’ at Boston, United States to explore his chef career for another 3 years later on operating his beverage supply factory business produce such fruit juices and soya beans in Selangor, Malaysia.
Subsequent to the market downturn crisis, Ah Tan passed the beverage supply career to his sisters then himself again travelled oveseas to Irelang for another 2 years while his sisters (and in-law) operating using his recipe, a ‘Ipoh Sar Ho Fan’ stall in ‘Lan Chuan Restaurant’ at Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur in the year 2002 then another stall at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI) in the year 2004. At the same time after Ah Tan returned to home country, he too running his Sar Ho Fan stall in the ‘ParkWay’ at Subang Jaya SS19 before they successfully combined established their very own “Restoran Kar Heong” Ipoh Sar Ho Fan & Chicken Rice at Subang Jaya SS 14 in the year 2006. The 2nd outlet at Kota Damansara (Dataran Sunway) and the 3rd outlet at Taman Connaught, Cheras in the year 2012.
In ‘Kar Heong’ Ipoh Bean Sprout Chicken Rice restaurant, the 1st to be recommended is their home recipe ‘Ipoh Sar Ho Fan’ which made up with fresh ‘Ho Fan’ sent daily from Ipoh in their homemade recipe soup base boiled overtime ingredients such fresh chicken bones, Ikan Bilis and ‘Jo Hao Fish’ or also name ‘Left Mouth Fish’ which grilled before smashed into powder before poured into the soup. Secondly will be their Clear Steamed Chicken or ‘Pak Cham Kai’ 45 minutes boiled using 2.2-2.3kg fresh Garden Chicken or Bukit Mertajam Chicken in the soup base before served to present the top eatery taste, also never seperate with their fresh bean sprout from Ipoh.
For side order dish, their Fresh Prawn Wantan Soup wrapped using fresh sea shrimp can be seen on every tables in the restaurant. Another will be the Octopus Meat Ball from Ipoh boiled in the soup base cannot be missed when you take their chicken rice in Kar Heong Restaurant. Nonetheless, their famous home recipe Curry Mee with choices to topped with ‘Char Siew’, ‘Siew Nyuk’ or Steamed Chicken mixed with ‘Xi Ham’ and dry tau foo inside brings the complete bowl of their signature Curry Mee ready to taste.
