HALF CENTURY HOME MADE “SAI TOH FISH BALL” BY TEH FAMILY BEING CARRIED INTO 3RD GENERATION IN BUTTERWORTH, PENANG
Home made “Sai Toh Fish” fish ball and fish cake always being one of the locals favourites selection throughout the nation, also one of the traditional authentic eatery practised since hundred year ago by Chinese religious. In North Malaysia, we found a sai toh fish ball specialized shop recently into 3rd generation with half century history recipes.
The local originated Mr. Teh Sooi Lick who born in year 1952 was the second generation of their home made fish ball career, also the founder of the local famous kuay teow soup fish ball specialized shop “Sai Toh Lim Restaurant” since 1972 in Butterworth, Penang being assisted by wife Ms. Teoh Ai Chin (born 1958 in Perak). Currently been generation passed onto their son, the 3rd generation, Teh Yih How who with his age of 30 years old, also the current owner of the restaurant further exposed their family generation recipes to the public.
Mr. Teh Sooi Lick who with his age of 63 years old recently, was the 2nd generation on their home made fish ball and kuay teow soup stepped into the industry since kids helping parents in their mobile noodle stall (since 1950s) at Raja Uda, Penang serving their home recipe fish ball noodle soup with no signage. Then in year 1972 at his age of 20 years old been recipes passed onto by parents running his roadside food stall at Bagan Luar further his explosure in the industry named “Sai Toh Lim” untill 1992.
In order to expose wider and with the experience hold by Sooi Lick enabled him to start his fish ball production and supplies career afterwards in Penang. Subsequent to the great response from the market later on successfully established his very first and owned specialized restaurant in year 1999 together with wife, and officially named as “Sai Toh Lim Restaurant” introducing all their home recipe selections to the market.
While the 3rd generation Teh Yih How who formerly was in Electronic Industry, having great interest in family generation career and wishing to continue expose his grandparents recipe stepped into the food and beverage industry since year 2007 when returned from Taiwan at his age of 22 years old. Recently been fully took over the responsibility to continue family career in the restaurant.
In this fish ball noodle house, the owners top recommended in menus surely will be their home made Signature Fish Ball & Fish Cake, which made using deep sea fresh “Sai Toh Fish” and mixed into slight “Eel Fish” to presents their 3 generation traditional family recipe to the public you must taste. The freshness and chewing texture when bites into mouth will be the best eatery found in town. Recently, more than 100,000 pieces of fish ball to be produced in centralized kitchen to meet the market demand.
Others, the newly introduced Fish Dorab Roll also among the recommended, also recently the favourites by their regulars. Moreover, Yih How’s home made Taiwanese Dumpling to be served in boiled or deep fried also among the top seller in the restaurant. Their home made dumpling prepared in mixtures of pork, prawn, vege, water chesnut (“Ma Ti”) and 6 secret recipe ingredients then wrapped before cooked and served you cannot aside.
Another will be their Signature Pork Roll which prepared with the mixture of pork and ‘sengkuang’ vegetables added mixed with their 5 ingredients recipe then wrapped with dried beancurd skin then served in deep fried brings the authentic exotic eatery in town.
As side order, you can try their home cooked Stewed Mushroom Chicken Feet which boiled few hours with 5 home recipe ingredients mixtures. They also introduced one of the local Penang traditional eatery “Hokkien Prawn Noodles”, prepared with home soup base boiled 6 hours insided with pork bones and prawn shells. Served mixed with their home fried sambal chilli paste and topped with prawn, pork slice, fish ball, fish cake, veges and fried onions shredded also the most wanted by visitors.
