CHEF GUAN LEADING “ONG LAI” WITH AUTHENTIC CHINESE CUISINE RECIPE ON HIS 30 YEARS CHEFING EXPERIENCE

As known in North Malaysia the Pulau Pinang is one of our nation’s best eatery town with various cuisines practiced everywhere, also the visiting point by visitors.  Here in Butterworth we found and recognised the local response “Ong Lai” chinese seafood restaurant leads by their Chef Guan who having 30 years experience in the industry.

The Penang originated Mr. Lye Soo Guan who born in year 1965 was the founder, and together with wife Ms. Mayna Beh (born 1970) are the recent owners of the local well known “Ong Lai Seafood” chinese restaurant along Jalan Raja Uda introducing their home recipe chinese and seafood cuisines selections to the public operating into 10 years.

Lye Soo Guan or known Chef Guan who at his age of 50 years old currently, initially stepped into the f&b industry since his age of 19 years old in 1983 recruited himself into the “Xi Ling Men Restaurant” in Georgetown as kitchen trainee began his career in chefing field for about 4 years.  Then joined the “Xuang Xi Lou”(pronouns) as chef to further sharpen his profession in the industry, also stayed for few years before shifted to a fusion food restaurant “Fisherman Wharf” in Batu Ferringi exposed another 5 years.

While in year 1997 with the opportunity given, Chef Guan successfully took over the “Fisherman Wharf” restaurant in partnership continued his explosure in the industry being assisted by wife Mayna, reached year 2000.  Later on established his first owned seafood restaurant named “New Jumbo” at Burma Road, Georgetown but unsuccessfull.  Without giving-up, Chef Guan returned to hometown Butterworth began his seafood stall at Raja Uda in 2001 having great response enabled him to established the “Ong Lai Seafood” restaurant in year 2005 along Jalan Raja Uda (recent location), being recognized after 10 years in 2015.

In “Ong Lai”, the founder’s top recommended in menus will be their Nyonya Steamed Fish.  Snapper or red fish and Stingray commonly selected steamed for 15 minutes with their home made nyonya sauce from 6 ingredients recipe brings the exotic sour and spicy taste you must have a try when reached Butterworth.  Especially the authentic spices nyonya sauce taken with fish into mouth.

Secondly will be their Deep Stir Fried Eggplant which only in “Ong Lai”, also one of their signature most wanted by regulars.  Eggplant being deep fried then prepared in stir fried in oyster sauce with dried shrimp, onions and chillies bring salted, spicy and excellent exotic eatery found as one of the best in town you never regret after taken.

Another recommended among menu in the restaurant is their Tasty Spicy Chicken.  Local feeded chicken selected and marinated overnight with in-house recipe such yellow ginger spice, then prepared in deep fried finally served stir fried with their home made sauce from 6 ingredients mixtures you cannot aside.  Especially the taste and meats texture itself when bites.

Moreover, the Salad Squid also one of the signature top seller selection in the restaurant.  Fresh sea squid being cutted into pieces then deep fried with recipe flur, and served stir with garlic and curry leaves with poured into mayonnaise brings tasty crispy eatery most wanted by visitors.  Also one of the best eatery found in town.

Nonetheless, their Deep Fried Pork or ‘Nan Ru Rou’ also the founder’s favourites.  Pork belly used prepared with marinated overnight in 6 ingredients recipe spices, then served in deep fried sided with home made sweet and sour sauce you cannot missed when stepped into the “Ong Lai Seafood” at Raja Uda, Butterworth.
