WAI TEIK WITH HIS 35 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY STILL RECENTLY PRACTISED THE CHARCOAL ROASTED IN BUTTERWORTH
One of the local Malaysian’s favourite eatery choice “Roasted Mix” especially by chinese religious frequently practised everywhere in the nation. Here in North Malaysia, Pulau Pinang we found an still on-going traditional charcoal roasted mix restaurant “Wai Teik” exposed in Butterworth into 30 years since 1980s.
The local originated Mr. Tan Wai Teik who born in year 1966 was the founder, and together with wife Ms. Joey Yeoh Guek Nee (born 1968) are the recent owners of the local well known “Restoran Wai Teik” or famously known “Teik Kee” charcoal roasted house introducing their home recipe selections to the public along Jalan Kampung Paya.
Tan Wai Teik who at his age of 49 years old currently, initially stepped into the food industry since year 1979 at his age of only 13 reached Bukit Timah, Singapore recruited himself into a chinese cuisine restaurant as kitchen trainee stayed about four years where he began his chefing career. Later on joined another restaurant as assistant chef at Danga Bay, Johor Bahru for another 3 years to further sharpen his profession and exposed his roasted experience in the industry.
While in year 1986, Wai Teik grapped the opportunity after returned to home town and established his very first and owned food stall named “Teik Kee” in a coffee shop introducing his home made roasted mix to the locals for about 5 years at Raja Uda, Butterworth then moved into ‘Lian Yuen Kopitiam’(pronouns) continued his explosure practised 14 years there.
After 20 years in his roasted field and subsequent to the great response from the market allowed Wai Teik to moved into wider location along Jalan Raja Uda named “Teik Kee Roasted” in year 2005, still on-going as outlet. Then sucessfully established his very 1st specialized shop in 2008 at Jalan Kampung Paya officially named “Restoran Wai Teik” or locally known “Teik Kee Roasted Restaurant” as main centralized kitchen, being assisted by wife Joey Yeoh.
In Teik Kee Roasted, the founder’s top recommended in menus will be their home recipe charcoal Roasted Duck. Commonly local fresh duck with weight of about 2.5kg selected being dry-up for few hours after cleaned, then marinated half hour with founder’s 8 recipes include herbals mixtures and roasted for 35 minutes on charcoal before served brings very exotic taste and outstanding meats texture in bites you must have a try when reached Butterworth.
Secondly will be their Roasted Pork Belly, which also one of the top seller in the restaurant. Local pork belly used marinated an hour with 6 home recipe ingredients, touched-up skin level then charcoal roasted for another 50 minutes brings authentic salted taste and crispy skin when bites you never regret after taken.
Other than roasted meats, they also introducing the Fried Fish with Onions & Salted Beans. Sea grouper fish fillet selected deep fried topped with fried ginger shredded, chillies and onions then served poured onto their home salted beans sauce made from 7 spices you cannot aside. Also one of their signature most wanted menu by regulars in the restaurant.
Moreover, Curry Fish Head also being introduced with their home made curry paste recipe by founder. Grouper fish head steamed 20 minutes, prepared in cooked with Wai Teik’s home fried curry paste made from more than 10 ingredients mixture, then served boiled in claypot mixed into lady finger, eggplant and veges brings exotic and spicy taste likes by those who takes spicy.
Nonetheless, the Laksa Kampung Fish in soup serves also among the recommended likes by visitors. Local fresh ‘kampung fish’ selected boiled with their in-house 3 hours boiled laksa soup base prepared with more than 10 spices, then served topped with some mint leaves you cannot missed when stepped into the “Restoran Wai Teik” or “Teik Kee Roasted” at Raja Uda, Butterworth.
