THE 100 YEARS HISTORY AUTHENTIC TRADITIONAL COFFEE SHOP SINCE 1915 STILL CARRIED RECENTLY INTO 4TH GENERATION
In our nation Malaysia, you can found hundred thousand of traditional or authentic coffee shop everywhere in the states. But here in the north, we found to be recognised the “Koek Kee” coffee shop established since year 1915 by Chin family still running in Sungai Petani, Kedah under the same roof.
The local originated Mr. Chin Kaw Kim (3rd generation) who born in year 1945 is the recent owner of the local well known “Koek Kee” restaurant, running together with wife Ms. Ooi Geak San (born 1960) and being assisted by son Chin Kah Wey (4th generation) who at his age of 33 currently. Serving their authentic traditional dim sum and pao selections to the locals and visitors on home generation recipes.
Began from Sir Chin (Chin Kaw Kim’s grandfather) who was China originated, reached Ansun, Perak during early 1900s was the founder of the 100 years decade “Kok Kee” coffee shop at Sungai Petani, Kedah in year 1915 introducing his home made dim sum and pao recipe to the locals along Jalan Dewa. Then been generation passed onto his 2nd generation Mr. Chin Ee Cheong (1915-1994), who is Kaw Kim’s father, continue the coffee shop in 1950s.
Chin Kaw Kim (recent owner) who at his age of 70 years old currently, who helping in the restaurant since his age of 14 years old later on in year 1980 been taken the responsibility to continue family’s career at his 35 of age after his marriage, being assisted by wife Geak San, and renamed the coffee shop to “Koek Kee”. While his son Kah Wey, the 4th generation, who also the restaurant dim sum chef today, stepped into the industry after education at his 21st will also going to be the “Koek Kee” next generation.
In Koek Kee today, the owner first top recommended in menus will be their homemade recipe traditional “Siu Mai” or Steamed Pork Dumpling. Prepared using fresh pork minced wrapped then topped with crab eggs, then served after 10 minutes steamed will be the authentic eatery you must have a try when reached Sungai Petani. Especially the meats texture itself in bites.
Secondly will be their Signature “Dai Pao” or known Giant Steamed Bun which among the restaurant’s top seller. Made insided with home recipe mixtures of pork, chicken, mushroom, chinese sausage and water mushroom wrapped with handmade flur layer, then served after minutes steamed will be one of the best in town you cannot aside.
Another will be their “Lo Mai Kai” or Steamed Glutinous Rice. Home made char siew (roasted pork) prepared with mixtures of 11 ingredients recipe, then steamed half hour with glutinous rice brings exotic taste you never regret after consumed. Also their Prawn Dumpling or “Har Kao”, which prepared wrapped with rice-made outer layer insided with fresh sea prawn.
Moreover, their Char Siew Pao also among the most wanted by regulars which brings traditional taste eatery. Steamed Spare Ribs with soy beans and Sour & Spicy Steamed Spare Ribs are too introduced by the owner which almost can be seen on every single table in the restaurant, likes by the public.
Nonetheless, there are also various of steamed and deep fried dim sum available on home recipes, and steamed buns (pao) selections you should taste and cannot missed when stepped into this decade 100 years history dim sum coffee shop “Koek Kee” carried by Chin family at Sungai Petani, Kedah.
