TASTE AH ZAI’s FAMOUS CANTONESE YONG TAU FOO, ASSAM LAKSA & CURRY MEE @ 60 YEARS RECIPE AT ULU BERNAM (TG. MALIM)
Frequently heard and well known by others the local’s hakka yong tau foo to be our nation’s chinese eatery taken, and also the Penang laksa (assam laksa) favourite by visitors when go north. But here in the mid Malaysia, we found and recognised the best locals recommended “Restoran Ah Zai” presenting their cantonese yong tau foo, assam laksa, curry mee and others which into 2nd generation with 60 years recipes at Tanjung Malim border or Ulu Bernam having great response from their eaters.
The Ulu Selangor originated Mr. Chew Siew Choon who born in year 1967, together with his lovely wife Ms. Lai Wai Kuen (born 1974), who is Tanjung Malim origin, both are the recent owners of the “Restoran Ah Zai” exposed into specialized shop at Ulu Bernam. And being the 2nd generation continue carried their mother’s 60 years recipes, also assisting by their 3rd generation sons and daughter currently.
The founder, Madam Chan Woke Lin (Wai Kuen’s mother) who locally born in year 1933 at her age of 82 years old recently, began her very 1st roadside noodle stall in 1950s along Jalan Loke Yew, Tanjung Malim oldtown serving her homemade cantonese yong tau foo, curry mee and assam laksa on her pair of hands.
While Lai Wai Kuen who at her age of 41 years old currently, stepped into the industry since her teenager age helping mother in the noodle stall been passed onto responsibility to continue the career, took over at her age of 18 year old in 1992 together with her recent husband Chew Siew Choon or Ah Zai, on-going practised at the same place untill today, will be ended completely in August 2015.
Subsequent to the re-construction project and in order to further their exposure, enabled the couple decided to established their first specialized restaurant in the mid 2015 officially named “Restoran Ah Zai” continue their career along Jalan Besar, Taman Paim Siong (Tanjung Malim border to Ulu Bernam) which is the recent location. Being assisted fully by their eldest son Chew Yi Heng (born 1995).
In this noodle house, the owners top recommended in menus will be their Curry Noodle or Curry Mee. Cooked with their home recipe curry paste prepared in an hour fried with 8 ingredients, served mixed into curry dried pork skin and tooped with cockles & beansprout you must have a try when reached Tanjung Malim. Additional yong tau foo will be on customer’s request.
Secondly will be their Cuttlefish Rojak or known locally “Sotong Kangkung”, which is their regulars most wanted. Fresh local cuttlefish prepared in cutted pieces, boil-cooked mixed with local “kangkung” veges then served topped with their homemade sauce mixture from 5 spices, and peanuts shredded power brings sweet & exotic slight spicy taste you will never regret after taken.
Another will be their 2-generation Assam Laksa by Wai Kuen’s mother, which among their top seller. Soup base boiled at least 3 hours with 6 home secret recipes, served mixed with pineapple, onion slices, cucumber shredded then topped with mint leafs and “Mamo” (kampung fish) boiled fillet will be the best laksa in town.
Moreover, their Char Kuey Teow (Fried Flat Rice Noodles) by Wai Kuen too among the signature in Ah Zai noodle house today. Flat rice noodle dry fried with cockles, veges, fish cake slice, beansprout, prawn and into chicken egg brings very exotic eatery you cannot aside in the restaurant recently.
Nonetheless, the owners also introduced their most popular signature homemade 60 years 2-generation Cantonese Yong Tau Foo which with selections of bittergourd, eggplant, red chilli, lady finger, dried beancurd, fish ball, dumpling and dried beancurd skin (fu chuk) all insided with their daily prepared fresh fish paste made from mixtures of “Xi Tao” and “Kao” fish also known Tenggiri you surely cannot missed when stepped into the “Restoran Ah Zai” noodle restaurant along Jalan Besar, Ulu Bernam or the Tanjung Malim border.
