TASTE THE EAST COAST CHINESE “KAMPUNG” HOME RECIPES INTO 10TH YEARS CARRIED BY CHONG FAMILY

Heard of the word “Kampung” or village home recipe will being understand to have traditional local home cuisine by respective local’s home-cook dishes which sometimes let the public think of unpresentable.  But here in Pahang, under the Bentong region we found to recognise the “Kampung” eating restaurant which serving their home recipes favourites by most of the visitors passed-by before and after reached Genting Highland, Pahang.

The Selangor originated Mr. Chong Ah Choo (Ah Meng) who born in year 1958, together with his wife Madam Chan Swee Tai (born 1958), who is Bentong locals, both were the founders and immediate owners of the well known “Gerai Makan Dan Minum Kampung” chinese cuisine restaurant introducing all their home recipe signatures menu to the locals and visitors under a roof at Bukit Tinggi, Bentong.

Chong Ah Choo or known Ah Meng who at his age of 57 years old, formerly was in Vehicle Towing Industry, all the while having great interest in eatery and foreseen the market opportunity in f&b industry initially stepped into the career in year 2006 with wife Swee Tai successfully established their very 1st and owned restaurant named “Gerai Makan Dan Minum Kampung” in Kg. Bukit Tinggi.

From the beginning, Ah Meng’s younger brother Chong Ah Fatt (born 1967), who also the restaurant’s recent main chef, initially been touched the f&b career since 1987 at his age of 19th at Genting Sempah as kitchen trainee.  While in year 2006 after “Kampung” established, Ah Fatt joined his brother holding the kitchen positions to run their home recipes assisted by nephew Chong Kui Soon, born 1992 (Ah Meng’s son) who touched the career since teenager, and niece Chong Wai Peng, born 1990 (Ah Meng’s daughter) as helping chefs, the 2nd generation.

Besides, Ah Meng’s other daughters Chong Wai Leng (born 1984), Chong Wai Chuen (born 1985) and the youngest Chong Wai Yee (born 1994) all being assisting in the restaurant, forming in a family “Kampung” chinese cuisine home recipe eating house into 10 years recently.

In “Kampung”, the Chef’s first top recommended in menus will be their Claypot Smoked Catfish which most wanted by visitors.  River Catfish or locally known “Patin Buah” being selected, fresh smoked about 5 minutes in claypot with their homemade sauce from 8 recipes mixture poured into, then served topped with spring onions shredded brings exotic fish freshness taste you must try when reached Bentong, Pahang.

Secondly will be their Fried Kampung Chicken with Rice Wine, is among their home-cook signature.  Local feeded village chicken selected, stir fried with Bukit Tinggi local ginger shredded, black fungus and their homemade rice wine brings really fantastic authentic eatery in town, neither found elsewhere only in “Kampung”.  Especially the taste into mouth and the chicken meats texture itself in bites.

Another will be their Claypot Prawn Grass Noodles, also among the restaurant’s top seller.  Fresh river prawn being selected, boiled in claypot with their in-house soup base prepared, poured into rice wine, into gingers and another 7 ingredients mixture recipe, then served with grass noodles insided brings prawn freshness and exotic slight spicy taste you will never regret after consumed.

Also a dish from the owner Swee Tai’s (Ah Meng’s wife) home recipe, the Guang-Xi Braised Dried Beancurd.  Bentong local’s famous homemade dried beancurd or known “Tau Pok” used and prepared with insided mixtures of pork minced, fish paste and spring veges, then braised hours with garlic and her home 5 recipes served the home-cooked dish you cannot aside.

Nonetheless, the Chef also introduced their signature Baby Season Bean Pork which favourite by the regulars.  Slices belly pork prepared in crispy deep fried, seconds dry fried with baby season beans brings sweet & salty taste, one of the best choice you cannot missed when stepped into the “Gerai Makan Dan Minum Kampung” restaurant at Bukit Tinggi, Bentong in State of Pahang.
