“Lei Cha” or also known Ground Tea is a traditional Southern Chinese tea-based beverage or gruel which began since thousands of years ago originated from the Hakka regions of Taiwan (China), being among the local’s favourite eatery not only for Hakka religious but also the others in our nation. Here in the South Malaysia (Johor), we found and successfully recognised among the best authentic Lei Cha (Ground Tea) carried by the Phang family in Kluang since 1990s.
The local originated Mr. Phang Chong Chee (born 1946), together with his wife Madam Sam Kam Lin (born 1954) both were the initial founders began serving their homemade Hakka traditional “Lei Cha” (Ground Tea) since the 1990s at Taman Intan, Kluang operating their couple’s foodstall in chinese coffee shop then moved to other garden spent their 20 years exposure in the career insisting to introduce their home recipe Hakka traditional tea-based eatery all the while having great response from the public.
While in year 2017, the Phang couple’s next generation, son Phang Chin Foo (born 1973) who since his twenties touched the industry helping parents on the field with his vision to continue further their expose in family’s home recipes, also foreseen the market opportunity in the f&b industry. Added with his wish in presenting more authentic traditional Hakka delicacy eateries to the locals allowed him successfully established their very 1st and owned eating house named “Kedai Makanan & Minuman HK 2 U” at Taman Kluang Indah, being assisted by wife Lee Wan Ying and parents not only serving their 20 years history mother’s “Lei Cha” but also other signature Hakka recipes to the locals and visitors under a roof, stayed in Kluang.
In this Hakka specialized restaurant “HK 2 U”, the owner’s first top recommended in menus surely will be their family’s 20 years “Homemade Ground Tea (Lei Cha)” which most wanted by their regular customers from all over the nation. The tea-based (Tea/Soup) prepared with the mixtures of about 8 ingredients made up of tea leafs and veges ready in paste after blended then fried for half an hour, mixed with high-boiled water then served poured into mixtures of shredded veges of long beans, cabbage, Mali leafs, dried radish, garlic beancurd, dried shrimp, peanuts shredded etc brings a bowl of wonderful appertising mint & exotic salty taste “Lei Cha” or Hakka Ground Tea you must try.
Secondly will be their Fried Yam Abacus or locally known “Suan Pan Zhi”, which also among the Hakka’s authentic traditional eatery taken since decades. They homemade yam abacus in round-pieces in-house, then fried in home recipes mixed with spring onions shredded, chopped dried radish, minced pork and garlic brings excellent tasty eatery you neither found the same in town. Especially the yam abacus bites texture itself into mouth and the “wok” taste in swallowed.
Another will be their “Hakka Leaves Cake”, made from the Chinese Mugwort which among the restaurant’s daily top seller in their chinese cakes corner. Homemade flour mixed with mugwort leaf extracts wrapped insided with green beans paste then steam-cooked in about 10 minutes before serve brings fair sweet and slight mugwort’s taste you will never regret after tasted here.
Nonetheless, the Phang family also introduced their signature home recipe Klepon or locally known “Ondeh-Ondeh” which is an Indonesian’s traditional rice cakes being favourite by the locals currently. They prepared using purple sweet potatoes mixed into quality glutinous rice flour then wrapped insided with homemade rock sugar liquid paste, served after minutes boiled and coated in grated coconut brings unbelievable exploding bites into mouth you really cannot missed when stepped into this recommended Hakka restaurant “Kedai Makanan & Minuman HK 2 U” at Taman Kluang Indah, Kluang (Johor).
